Why go to Portugal?
- Amazing variety of scenery, from the green, rolling hills of the North, to the sun-baked red clay cliffs of the south.
- Relatively short flight time - 2hrs 45mins from UK
- The Algarve is certainly not undeveloped, but the landscape remains generally tasteful, if you avoid the bigger tourist centres, such as Albufeira, Portimao, Quarteira. East of Faro is less developed, with the delightful town of Tavira a great option
- The Algarve in general offers a great holiday experience: clean, golden sand beaches, attractive towns with plenty of restaurants, shops and medical facilities and plenty of options with childcare
- Towns generally have a less tourist-influenced feel than Spain
- There’s a lot to explore in the Algarve - medieval towns such as Silves, the mountain spa town of Monchique, inland towns such as San Bras, the fantastic faded Rococo place at Estoi, the wild windswept coast of Cape St Vincent and Sagres are all within easy reach by car
- Properties and hotels tend to be high quality and spacious
- Car hire is relatively cheap
- Plenty of activities, from water parks to the famous golf courses
- Children are adored and well catered for
- Northern Portugal is equally well-equipped for the tourist and serious traveller, with a wide range of activities, towns, cultural pursuits and good quality accommodation
- Food is good, with plenty of simple chicken and fish dishes - ideal for the under-fives
- Summer weather is hot, dry and sunny, with low humidity and cooling breezes
- The weather is generally good from mid-May to mid-October, and often surprisingly good in January and February - worth considering for a winter break
Things to think about:
- The sea tends to be relatively cold and rough, although some beaches are calmer
- If you like big towns with lots of cultural/historical interest, then there are better choices, unless you’re near Lisbon
- Food can be patchy - if you find a restaurant you like, stick with it
- Driving can be stressful - be defensive

Casa da Infanta is located in a stunning position on the cliffs of Ferragudo in the Western Algarve. It faces west over the bay of Lagos, towards Sagres and the sunsets. There are magnificent views over the Algarve coast and a sandy beach is only 50 metres away just below the property, reached by steep private steps, or by a longer walk through the estate grounds.
Ferragudo is 1 km away and is a quiet, charming, waterside village, and a walk along the beach will bring you to some delightful small restaurants where you can get delicious fresh fish grilled on a charcoal brazier. There are many golf courses within a short drive of the property. |

Originally the home of the Princess of Portugal, the property remains in the ownership of the Portuguese Royal Family. The interiors have been completely refurbished and updated, yet retain many of the original features, including the antique beds with family coat of arms.
There are a total of 9 bedrooms all with en-suite bathrooms, spread over three floors with a lift service at each level (all bedrooms have satellite TV and hairdryers).

Entrance hall and cloakroom. Double doors leading to a private chapel. Formal dining room, seating 8 at the main table, and a further 8 – 10 on two circular tables. The main drawing room, with sea view and a grand piano opens to an extensive terrace (outside dining for 16 people). There are terraces at all three levels, with views, and a swimming pool (12.5 x 5m) overlooking the sea. Pool heating is included in the rental. A downstairs bar and WC are available from the pool area, which also has a poolside shower.
Music room with CD player. Well equipped kitchen and breakfast room which is ideal for children’s meals. 2 double bedrooms and 1 twin bedroom, one with en-suite shower room and the others with en-suite bathrooms, sea views and doors leading to shared terraces. One further twin bedroom with en-suite bathroom, garden/river view and doors to a terrace. The former garage has been turned into a playroom for children and has table tennis.
First Floor (available for full capacity rentals only)

There are 2/3 bedroom townhouses and 3/4/5 bedroom villas. All have private pools and gardens – the townhouse pools are smaller, but still a reasonable size. The houses and villas are all of an extremely high standard. Decorated in cool, neutral colours with shaker style furniture, they are very spacious and very well equipped. There is air conditioning/heating in all rooms, 3 TVs (in a 3 bed townhouse) all with internet, email and playstation, film access, and a full list of satellite stations including all UK terrestrial channels. DvD’s are available for hire. There’s a cd system in the lounge/dining room. The bedrooms are very large, all with spacious en suite bathrooms with both a shower and bath. The living/dining room is spacious and very comfortable – and leads to a patio (equipped with barbecue) and to the garden and pool. The kitchens are stylish and superbly equipped, with every device you could wish for including microwave, dishwasher, washing machine, coffee maker, juicer, and very high quality cutlery and crockery. The towel and bathroom provision is as per a hotel – fluffy white towels, pool towels, bathrobes and slippers, good quality toiletries.
The villas and townhouses are all set on the small site (it can be walked around easily, unlike many villa resorts) and linked with cobbled pedestrian lanes. They benefit from daily hotel-style maid service – beds are changed every day, towels changed, rubbish taken care of and the whole house cleaned and tidied from top to bottom. |

There is a very attractive central area with a huge pool and childrens pool, a poolside restaurant/café for lunches and snacks, and a more formal restaurant upstairs. There is also a small childrens outdoor playground. This is where the excellent mini club is to be found, along with the gym and indoor pool/outdoor Jacuzzi. The resort also has a shopping area with groceries, gourmet food and wine and a very good Italian Trattoria, which also offers take away. There are 2 massage/beauty salons, or in villa massage can be arranged. Reception can be summoned from the villa, and can arrange more or less anything – from bikes (for children too), to tennis, riding, golf and boat trips. The beach is a 2 min drive away (2km), with easy, shaded parking. |

The crèche includes a fully equipped nursery with cots for the occasional afternoon nap, whilst the shaded enclosed play area where the staff accompanies and plays with the more active young ones is generously supplied with a variety of safe toys. Water wings are available for those old enough to paddle in the pool and protective head wear, sun lotions and creams are always at hand.
For the slightly older children, a full activity programme including painting, modelling, and sculpting is offered. The activities are designed to be fun, but also to develop young skills and dexterity. There is even an exclusive restaurant just for the Penguin Village children offering a child oriented menu. A three-kilometre jogging circuit with 12 exercise stations for individual and family runs that is free of charge for guests. A fully equipped gymnasium is also free of charge for guests and a full-size snooker table is available free of charge for guests over 18 years of age.Mountain bikes are available all year round for rides within the resort at a cost of 5.00Euros for two hours. An Archery Academy (lessons available on request). Water sports are available from June to September, and the Beach Club offers windsurfing, sailing, pedaloes, waterskiing, sunbeds, towel service and a restaurant. The resort even has its own mini-resort just for children - The Penguin Village. With its 3000 square meters of enclosed grounds, it’s is a totally safe and fun area offering your children their own dedicated play area. The Village is open during the Christmas, Easter and Summer holidays and welcomes children from 6months to 12 years old. The youngest children (6 - 36 months) are given individual attention by fully trained staff. The crèche includes a fully equipped nursery with cots for the occasional afternoon nap, whilst the shaded enclosed play area where the staff accompanies and plays with the more active young ones is generously supplied with a variety of safe toys. Water wings are available for those old enough to paddle in the pool and protective head wear, sun lotions and creams are always at hand. For the slightly older children, a full activity programme including painting, modelling, and sculpting is offered. The activities are designed to be fun, but also to develop young skills and dexterity. Planned events throughout the week also give the chance for parents to become involved in the Penguin Village activities. The Penguin Village is free for resident guests children between 3 and 12 years old. However for the younger ones (up until 2 years old inclusive) a local fee will apply of 43EUR/£30 per day which includes lunch and an afternoon snack, together with fruit juice, sun lotions, nappies etc. If only staying for a few hours the rate is 11EUR/£7.50 per hour with meals paid for separately. |

This village resort is situated in an elevated position in the heart of the Costa Vincentina Nature Reserve, at the western tip of the Algarve, near the villages of Sagres, Budens, Figueira and the fishing village of Salema, with its sandy beaches. Praia da Luz with its beaches is only 15 - 20 minutes away. The beaches of the West coast of Portugal are easily accessible. The nearest village to the resort is Budens, whilst the historic town of Lagos with its marinas, restaurants and nightlife is 15 -20 minutes drive away. Sagres and Cape St Vincente are within 20 minutes drive. The airport at Faro is a 60 minute drive.

Accommodation ranges from superbly appointed two or three bedroom village houses to luxury three or four bedroom spacious villas with private pools. Typical home comforts include a fully fitted kitchen, washing machine and satellite TV. Many have a dishwasher and microwave oven.

A large selection of restaurants and bars. 18 hole par 71 golf course which winds its way magically through the resort. Other on-site activities include tennis, bowls and archery, health and beauty spa and 'Club Esprit' offering a 'state of the art' gymnasium, indoor and outdoor heated pools and regular exercise classes. Horse riding in the nearby Costa Vicentina Nature Reserve, mountain biking, jeep safaris and water-based sports, can also be arranged. Maid service 4 times a week.
