Why go to cities?

  • With something new to see around every corner - from statues and fountains to museums and parks, to street markets and brightly lit department stores - cities are an excellent travel option for parents with babies and young children.
  • Efficient transport networks (as well as plenty of taxis for quick hops) make the main attractions easily accessible for parents with baby/ies on board.
  • Many of the cities we have selected have centres which are easy to get round on foot. This saves the hassle of too much tube or bussing, which can be efficient but very tiring for all concerned. We’ve given a walking tour suggestion where relevant.
  • There is also the advantage of pedestrianised centres, and the fact that you're never far from a cafe, toilet, shop, or taxi.
  • Big city squares can also provide excellent spaces for toddlers to run off excess energy, and it's amazing how they overcome language differences and play happily with their peers.
  • With so much going on, cities are child-friendly travel destinations for all seasons: from summer festivals and leisurely strolls through parks to Christmas, and the magical lighting up of city centres and the irresistible pull of festive shop windows and Christmas markets.

Things to think about:

  • With so much going on, it's tempting to cram as much in as you possibly can. But remember that young children can tire easily: try combining active with relaxing activities - perhaps a visit to a museum in the morning followed by a bit of park time in the afternoon.
  • Buy a local newspaper as soon as you arrive to find out about the various family-oriented activities/festivals/events that might be on offer during your stay.
  • For babies and very young children, it’s worth surrendering buggies in favour of carriers and backpacks, especially in crowded areas.
